Sustainable and Ethical Investing Fact Finding Support

Sustainable and ethical investing fact find support for financial advisers and wealth managers

You will be better placed than anyone to know what will and will not work for your business and your clients – which is why we offer fact finding ‘suggestions’ rather than a single solution.

Our six set advice process, shown above, has been designed based on many years discussing this area with advisers.

Getting started

Fact finding in this area usually starts with a single, simple question, intended to identify who is interest.

Example questions include:

  • ‘Would you like us to consider any environmental, social, ethical or faith related issues when looking at where you might invest?’
  • ‘Are there other issues that you might like to consider – like environmental or social issues?’

For clients with an interest in ethical and sustainable investing

Once you have identified who is and is not interested you can then explore your clients’ views and start narrowing down possible fund choices.

This what our SRI Stylefinder tool is for.

  • You can print or save your Stylefinder results, for further discussion and your audit trail.
  • You can enter your findings – the best fit ‘Styles’ – in the SRI Styles field on Fund EcoMarket

The Stylefinder questionnaire introduces clients to our ‘SRI Styles’ , which point to broad areas of interest and fund types.

Advisers are recommended to record their findings whether a client says ‘yes’ or ‘no’ – as well as any related comments or requests.

Identifying and responding to specific client preferences

For clients with more specific needs, you can use the filters on our Fund EcoMarket database to prompt conversations about what matters most to them, and other areas of interest.

Alternatively you may like to create your own questionnaire – although we believe conversations tend to work best.

We have share Word versions of our filters to make this easier:

  • Full list of Fund EcoMarket ESG/sustainability filter options. FEM Filter list – last updated November 2025
  • Full list of filter options with the explanatory ‘hover over’ text shown on our website. Download the verbose filter list here FEM verbose filter list – last updated November 2025
  • To see a brief description of each of the Fund EcoMarket filters see About Filter Options.
  • We recommend you discourage clients from ticking all possible boxes as that can become unmanageable
